Liz Cheney Warns of Fascist Tendencies in Trump, Citing General Mark Milley’s Assessment
Former Republican Representative Liz Cheney has issued a stark warning about the potential dangers of another Donald Trump presidency, aligning herself with the characterization of Trump as a “fascist” by retired General Mark Milley. During an appearance on NBC News‘ “Meet the Press,” Cheney expressed her agreement with Milley’s assessment, which is detailed in Bob Woodward‘s upcoming book.
Cheney emphasized that Trump’s behavior and policies are “fundamentally cruel” and highlighted his refusal to condemn the actions of his supporters during the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. She also criticized Trump’s false claims about aid to areas affected by hurricanes, suggesting that such actions disqualify him from leadership.
Cheney warned that a second Trump term would lead to a “chaotic and erratic” foreign policy, noting Trump’s penchant for embracing tyrants and his isolationist tendencies. She contrasted this with her support for a more internationalist approach, particularly in backing Ukraine against Russian aggression, a stance she shares with Vice President Kamala Harris.
The discussion around fascism is not limited to Cheney’s comments. Historian Timothy Snyder has also been vocal about the dangers of fascism, drawing parallels between the rise of fascist movements in Germany in the 1930s and current political trends in the United States. Snyder argues that voting, coalition-building, and the actions of conservatives and business leaders are crucial in preventing the erosion of democratic institutions.
Yale professor Jason Stanley, in his book “Erasing History: How Fascists Rewrite the Past to Control the Future,” further elaborates on how fascist movements often begin by altering educational systems and historical narratives to align with their ideologies. Stanley warns that such tactics are being employed by contemporary right-wing figures, including Donald Trump, to roll back civil rights and social justice advancements.
