Luis Javier Suárez Set for Crucial Match Against Former Club Marseille
Lisbon, Portugal — Luis Javier Suárez will face his former club, Olympique de Marseille, this Wednesday at Estadio José Alvalade during the UEFA Champions League matchday three. The match starts at 16:00 (ARG/URU/CHI), 14:00 (COL/PER/ECU), and will be broadcast live on Disney+ in South America.
Suárez is back on the international club stage after representing Colombia in friendly matches against Mexico and Canada recently. Although he participated, he did not score, prompting him to focus fully on his Champions League commitments with Sporting CP. This match marks his return to high-level European competition after missing the recent Taça de Portugal game against Paços Ferreira due to coaching decisions.
The Colombian striker’s last appearance for Sporting was on October 5, 2025, in a league match against Braga, where he found the net in a draw. Suárez returns to face Marseille with an added motivation as they look to improve their standings in the group.
This matchup is significant for Suárez, who played for Marseille during the 2022 season. He recalls, “It’s special because I will play in the Champions League. I worked hard to return to this level. It’s wonderful to be back in this competition.” His debut in the Champions League also came with Marseille against Tottenham on September 7, 2022, a match where he started but ended in defeat.
Since moving to Sporting, Suárez has excelled, having scored seven goals and provided two assists in ten official matches this season. He averages 0.79 goals per 90 minutes played, and in the Primeira Liga, he has netted six times in eight matches.
Suárez’s performance has positioned him strongly in the Colombian national team, as he continues to shine on the European stage. “I’m in the best moment of my career. I came to Sporting CP to be happy, and I have been since the beginning. My family is enjoying it, and personally, I feel fulfilled,” he said.
Although he scored a penalty in the loss against Napoli in the last Champions League match, he aims to find the net again against Marseille. As the two teams currently share three points in the group, this match could be vital for both their Championship hopes.
