Luton Embraces International Women’s Day with Inspiring Events
Luton Borough Council is set to celebrate International Women’s Day with a series of engaging events aimed at promoting and empowering women in society. The United Nations-endorsed day will be marked with a variety of activities, running before, on, and after 8 March.
One of the highlights includes a networking event at Metro Bank featuring speakers such as Sarah Loftus from Luton All Women’s Centre and Ruth Robb from Azalea, both organizations working towards empowering women in the community.
On 7 March, a virtual event organized by Women of Colour in Policing in Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Hertfordshire will focus on ‘Inspiring Inclusion’ with national and international speakers discussing the significance of role models.
Azalea will host an open house on International Women’s Day itself, where visitors can learn about the organization’s impactful work. Following this, the Town Hall will host ‘Culture Swaps’ and ‘Count Her In’ events featuring keynote speakers like the Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire and Councillor Hazel Simmons.
Additionally, the Centre for Youth and Community Development will hold a day-long celebration with various sessions including ‘Breakfast: play and stay session’ and ‘Afternoon tea: emotional wellbeing workshop and pampering session’.
Concluding the celebrations, a tea and cakes gathering at Central Baptist Church will be led by Councillor Charmaine Isles on 9 March.
Councillor Maria Lovell, emphasizing the importance of International Women’s Day, highlighted the significant role women play in societies and the need for ongoing efforts to achieve true equality and fairness.
With a workforce where women make up 63% and a leadership team with 19 female councillors out of 48, Luton Borough Council remains committed to promoting gender equality and inclusivity in the community.
