Managua Nicaragua Earthquake

MANAGUA, Nicaragua — A magnitude 5.3 earthquake shook parts of Managua and surrounding regions on Monday, November 17, 2025, at 11:23 AM local time. The epicenter was located approximately 22 kilometers west of the capital.

The quake struck at a depth of 128 kilometers, reducing its potentially damaging effects due to the distance from the surface. Reports indicated the tremor was felt across a wide area, though preliminary data suggests minimal damage.

According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the depth and strength of the earthquake helped moderate its intensity. The shaking was reported as weak to light in several municipalities, including Villa El Carmen, Nagarote, and Mateare.

Witnesses across the region shared their experiences, with many describing light vibrations. “I was in my hammock and thought a friend pranked me,” commented a resident from Matagalpa, about 113 kilometers from the epicenter.

Reports compiled by VolcanoDiscovery noted that many residents in Managua felt the quake, which was the most significant to hit the area since a 6.6 magnitude earthquake in April 2022.

Seismologists expect updates on the quake as more data is processed, and the status of aftershocks remains uncertain.

In response to the earthquake, local authorities advised residents to remain vigilant and prepared for potential aftershocks in the following days.
