Malaysia Assumes ASEAN Leadership Amid Regional Challenges

Malaysia Asean Leadership 2025

GEORGE TOWN, Malaysia — Malaysia has taken the helm of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) at a pivotal moment, as the region grapples with escalating tensions in the South China Sea, Myanmar‘s deepening crisis, and the return of tariff-driven geopolitics. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, 77, assumes the chairmanship following a career marked by political persecution, imprisonment, and decades in opposition.

Since becoming prime minister in late 2022, Anwar has sought to restore Malaysia’s global standing after years of domestic instability. His administration has prioritized foreign relations, with visits to China, the U.S., India, Russia, and Turkey underscoring his focus on addressing security and economic challenges. However, his leadership of ASEAN, a bloc representing the world’s fifth-largest economy with a combined GDP of $3.6 trillion, will face significant tests.

ASEAN’s consensus-driven model has often been criticized for rendering it ineffective on pressing issues. Thomas Daniel, a foreign-policy analyst at Malaysia’s Institute of Strategic and International Studies, noted, “Chairs will be judged by how they manage – or mismanage – hot-button issues, of which there are plenty for Malaysia to juggle this year.”

France has expressed strong support for Malaysia’s leadership. Axel Cruau, the French ambassador to Malaysia, emphasized the importance of ASEAN’s centrality and Malaysia’s role in driving regional initiatives. “France values ASEAN’s centrality, and Malaysia is essential, especially this year,” Cruau said during a media dialogue session in George Town. He highlighted France’s commitment to deepening dialogue with Malaysia and supporting ASEAN’s goals in areas such as energy, development, and security.

Cruau also noted Prime Minister Anwar’s active involvement in ASEAN’s presidency, including his upcoming visit to Brussels. “We hope for very positive news during this trip,” he said, adding that France is eager to collaborate with ASEAN as a whole.

As Malaysia navigates its year-long chairmanship, the world will be watching to see how it addresses regional challenges while advancing ASEAN’s agenda on trade, security, and stability.
