Maldives Flags And Israeli Passport Ban

MALE, Maldives — The Maldives has officially banned the entry of Israeli nationals in a bold response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, President Mohamed Muizzu announced on April 15, 2025. This legislative move, ratified shortly after approval by the parliament, reflects the government’s position against what it describes as Israeli atrocities and acts of genocide against the Palestinian people.

The ban is intended to remain in effect until Israel ceases its military operations against Gaza, according to a statement from the president’s office. Previously, Israel and the Maldives had no formal diplomatic ties since the 1970s, but travel was still permitted.

Last October, hostilities escalated following a multifront attack by Hamas that killed over 1,000 Israelis. In retaliation, Israeli military actions in Gaza have reportedly claimed the lives of over 62,000 Palestinians, prompting widespread global condemnation.

The legislation gained momentum as opposition parties and government allies exerted pressure on Muizzu to take a stand against the violence. The Maldives’ parliament previously debated the specifics of the ban, particularly concerns regarding individuals with dual nationality. Ultimately, a consensus emerged to restrict entry solely for Israeli passport holders until military actions cease.

According to government statistics from February, only 59 Israelis entered the Maldives out of 214,000 total foreign arrivals. The ban is part of the Maldives’ renewed advocacy for Palestinian rights, coming a day after Bangladesh introduced similar restrictions on its citizens traveling to Israel.

In light of the escalating situation, the Maldivian government emphasized its commitment to supporting an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. This legislative action aligns with ongoing responses from various countries asserting solidarity with Palestinians in the wake of the intensified conflict in Gaza.

As global discourse evolves around the Gaza conflict, the Maldives’ decision underscores a growing trend among nations expressing their stance through immigration policy. The situation on the ground remains tense as calls for ceasefire and humanitarian aid continue to surface.
