Maria Corina Machado Wins 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for Democracy Advocacy
OSLO, Norway — Maria Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her relentless advocacy for democratic rights in Venezuela. The Nobel Committee recognized her as a champion of peace, honoring her contributions to the fight against dictatorship.
Jørgen Watne Frydnes, chairman of the Nobel Committee, stated, “This prize goes to a brave and committed champion of peace, a woman who keeps the flame of democracy burning amidst a growing darkness.” Machado’s efforts over the years have made her a symbol of resistance in a country struggling under oppressive rule.
In a post shared on X, the committee praised Machado for her tireless work in promoting democratic values and pursuing a peaceful transition to democracy in Venezuela, stating that she has stood for free and fair elections for over two decades.
Frydnes emphasized the importance of defending democratic principles in the face of adversity. He said, “This is precisely what lies at the heart of democracy, our shared willingness to defend the principles of popular rule, even though we disagree. At a time when democracy is under threat, it is more important than ever to defend this common ground.”
Reflecting on her recognition, Machado commented, “I accept this award on behalf of all Venezuelans who continue to fight for their freedom and dignity.”
Machado’s acknowledgment comes at a critical time in global politics, where democratic values are frequently challenged. Her legacy as a unifying figure in Latin America serves as an inspiration for others advocating for human rights.
This year’s Nobel Prize, which consists of a medal, diploma, and cash prize of 11 million Swedish kronor, was announced during a ceremony at the Norwegian Nobel Institute. Stay tuned for further updates on this significant event.
