Maryland Ratepayers Face Higher Bills as BGE Prices Increase

MARYLAND — Advocates are warning residents that they will see higher bills from Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) starting this month. The Maryland Office of the People’s Counsel reports that average BGE customers will pay an additional $16 monthly.
This increase comes on top of the existing burden, as energy customers in Maryland are estimated to spend $1,000 more per year. Emily Scarr, a senior advisor with Maryland PIRG Foundation, criticized the situation, stating, “Mismanagement by BGE and PJM [Interconnection] has left customers facing relentless rate hikes while utilities and power plants rake in massive profits.”
The price hike took effect on Sept. 1, following the 2024 energy capacity auction conducted by PJM Interconnection. This auction significantly influenced electricity costs for BGE’s customers.
Meanwhile, residents protesting the Maryland Piedmont Reliability Project achieved a small win. The utility company requested U.S. Marshals’ assistance after local activists placed signs saying, “Prayer is the best way to meet the lord. Trespassing is the fastest.” This demonstration reflects the growing discontent among Maryland residents regarding rising energy costs.
