Beijing, ChinaDaniil Medvedev secured a place in the quarter-finals of the China Open with a solid performance against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Sunday. The match ended with a score of 6-3, 6-3, marking Medvedev’s third consecutive quarter-final appearance at this ATP 500 event.

The World No. 18, despite a challenging 2025 season and a record of 29-19, is aiming to regain his former glory. “Maybe the feeling of the game, the general awareness [which I have been] lacking lately,” Medvedev said when reflecting on areas he needs to improve. “I’m trying to get that back, and that’s why I’m happy today.”

After parting ways with his long-time coach, Gilles Cervara, following a disappointing first-round exit at the US Open, Medvedev has been training with Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke. Next, he faces second seed Alexander Zverev, who beat Corentin Moutet 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.

Zverev, who currently holds a 14-5 record in Beijing and is a three-time semi-finalist, praised Moutet’s performance, stating, “He plays good, there’s no secret about it.” Zverev, who has had prior back issues, noted, “I didn’t feel good physically again today, I had some pain. But when it mattered, I fought.”

Medvedev, a former Nitto ATP Finals champion, is also looking to improve his ranking, currently sitting at 21st in the Live Race To Turin. If he wins the title in Beijing, he could rise to 14th place.

Other notable players, like Lorenzo Musetti and Jannik Sinner, continue to advance in the tournament. Musetti won his match against Adrian Mannarino, while Sinner overcame Terence Atmane in a close contest.
