Memorial Day Events Mohawk Valley

UTICA, N.Y. — Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 26, and municipalities in the Mohawk Valley are preparing various events to honor U.S. military personnel who died while serving the nation.

Events will kick off early with ceremonies beginning at 8 a.m. in Leonardsville, where wreath-laying will precede a parade at 9:30 a.m. In Westmoreland and Clark Mills, a cemetery ceremony is set for Sunday, May 25, at 5 p.m. This event will feature prayers, a rifle salute, and the playing of taps.

On Memorial Day, several parades are planned. In Kirkland, a parade starts at 11 a.m. at Kirkland Cemetery, concluding with a ceremony at Clark Mills Post #26. The Oriskany Creek bridge on College Street will be the starting point for another parade at 9 a.m., which leads to the Village Green.

Additionally, a Memorial Day service begins at 9 a.m. at Memorial Park on Woodhull Road, followed by a ceremony at 1 p.m. in Myers Park and another at Veterans Memorial Park at 3 p.m. The New Hartford Veterans Memorial Park will also host a ceremony at 11 a.m. followed by a parade starting at 7 p.m.

On Friday, May 23, the Oneida Memorial Day parade will start at 7 p.m., with further events planned throughout the weekend. The New York State Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund will hold a ceremony at 2 p.m. at Griffiss Park on Monday.

Americans are set to travel in large numbers over Memorial Day weekend, with the AAA predicting over 45 million people will journey at least 50 miles.

As residents gather for festivities, the holiday serves as a somber reminder to honor the sacrifices of fallen service members.
