Memorial Day 2025: Store Hours and Closures for Travelers

ABC Digital Editors
Washington, D.C. — Record travel is expected throughout the Memorial Day holiday weekend, which falls on Monday, May 26, 2025. This holiday is often seen as the unofficial start of summer, and many Americans are planning trips and gatherings.
Before heading out this Memorial Day weekend, it’s important to know which stores and businesses will be open or closed. Most retail and grocery stores will remain open, with some even offering holiday sales. However, most corporate offices, government agencies, and banks will not operate on Monday, as it is a federal holiday.
Since Memorial Day is a bank holiday in the Federal Reserve system, most bank branches will be closed. Online banking and ATMs will still be available for transactions. Additionally, the stock market will be closed.
The United States Postal Service (USPS) will also observe Memorial Day, meaning no letters or packages will be delivered on May 26. All USPS locations will be closed for the holiday.
If you plan to ship a package via UPS on Memorial Day, be aware that there will be no pickups or deliveries. Many UPS Store locations will also be closed. FedEx will have limited services; only FedEx Custom Critical delivery will be available, while FedEx Office stores will operate on modified hours.
Additionally, all nonessential government offices—including the DMV, libraries, courthouses, and city hall—will be closed on Monday. Federal and state courts will also be closed, and most public school districts will not hold classes.
However, many stores and restaurants will be open, including large retailers such as Walmart, Target, and Kmart. One notable exception is Costco, which will remain closed on May 26. Grocery stores like Kroger, Aldi, H-E-B, Trader Joe's, Publix, and Whole Foods will be open, but it’s advisable to check local store hours before heading out.
