Michael S. Schmidt’s Role in Exposing Trump Controversies Through John Kelly’s Remarks
Michael S. Schmidt, an investigative reporter for The New York Times, has been at the forefront of several high-profile federal investigations, including those involving former President Donald Trump. Recently, his reporting has played a crucial role in the 2024 presidential campaign, particularly through his interview with John F. Kelly, Trump’s former White House chief of staff.
In an interview with Schmidt, Kelly characterized Trump as embodying “the general definition of fascist” and recalled Trump making controversial statements, including saying “Hitler did some good things, too.”
These remarks have been integrated into new advertisements by Vice President Kamala Harris‘s campaign, aimed at framing the 2024 election as a judgment on Trump’s leadership qualifications. The ads, titled “A Warning,” feature Kelly’s statements and are set to target areas with significant veteran populations.
Schmidt’s career at The New York Times has been marked by significant investigative work, including coverage of the Mueller investigation, the two Trump impeachments, and the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. He has also won two Pulitzer Prizes for his reporting on Trump investigations and sexual harassment settlements at Fox News.
Schmidt’s dedication to factual reporting and his commitment to maintaining journalistic integrity have been highlighted in his work and public statements. He has chosen not to vote in any elections since 2012 to maintain a barrier between himself and partisan influences.
