Mike Greenwell, Former Red Sox Player and Commissioner, Dies at 62

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Mike Greenwell, a former left fielder for the Boston Red Sox and serving Lee County commissioner, passed away on Thursday at the age of 62. The Lee County Government shared the news through a statement on social media.
The statement expressed profound sadness over Greenwell’s passing, calling him a “strong advocate for the people and businesses of Lee County.” It continued, “He will be remembered for seeking meaningful solutions to the challenges his community faced. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who were touched by his leadership.”
Greenwell had been battling medullary thyroid cancer, which had kept him from attending public meetings. His struggle with the disease was acknowledged by the county as part of the circumstances surrounding his service.
In July 2022, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis appointed Greenwell to the District 5 seat, filling the position left vacant by the late Frank Mann, who died from pancreatic cancer. Greenwell announced his candidacy for a full term in 2024, successfully winning the election thereafter.
A graduate of North Fort Myers High School, Greenwell played with the Red Sox from 1982 to 1996 and was honored with induction into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2008. After his baseball career, he returned to Fort Myers, where he became involved in local business, owning establishments such as 31 Produce and Gator Mike’s.
