St Mirren defender Shaun Rooney has been charged with assaulting an 18-year-old woman and with committing a breach of the peace involving an 18-year-old male during an incident in a Glasgow takeaway. The charges were confirmed by Police Scotland, who have stated that the breach of the peace charge is being treated as a hate crime.

The alleged incident took place in the early hours of 19 September on Queen Street, Glasgow. According to a Police Scotland spokesperson, “A 28-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with an assault on an 18-year-old woman and a breach of the peace against an 18-year-old man in takeaway premises.” Rooney has been released on an undertaking to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on a date that has yet to be determined, and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

In response to the charges, St Mirren has suspended Rooney on a precautionary basis and announced the commencement of a full investigation. A club spokesperson stated, “We will undertake a full investigation and will be making no further comment during this process.” Rooney’s suspension means he will not be participating in any games for the Scottish Premiership side until further notice.

St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson commented that any decisions regarding Rooney’s future with the club would be made at board level. Meanwhile, Robinson continues to focus on the team’s upcoming fixtures, including a match against Motherwell scheduled for Saturday.

Shaun Rooney, 28, began his football career in the youth ranks at Dundee United and has since played for several clubs in Scotland, including Dunfermline Athletic, Inverness Caledonian Thistle, and St Johnstone. He returned to Scottish football this summer from England, where he played for Fleetwood Town, managed at one point by former Celtic captain Scott Brown. Rooney has made 10 appearances for St Mirren so far this season.
