Mississippi Congressman Fires Staffer Over Controversial Social Media Comments Following Assassination Attempt on Trump
Democratic U.S. Representative Bennie Thompson of Mississippi‘s 2nd congressional district has taken action to terminate one of his staffers, Jacqueline Marsaw, after she made contentious remarks on social media in the aftermath of an assassination attempt on former U.S. president and Republican nominee Donald Trump.
Marsaw, who served as a case manager and field director for Congressman Thompson, posted controversial messages on Facebook following the violent incident at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. In response, Thompson decided to part ways with Marsaw.
In the wake of the incident, the Mississippi GOP called for Marsaw’s termination, pointing out her now-deleted Facebook post that hinted at the failed assassination attempt on Trump and suggested improvement in aiming to prevent missing next time.
Although Thompson did not explicitly condemn the rhetoric shared by Marsaw, he made it clear that he was made aware of the problematic post and that Marsaw is no longer part of his team.
Thompson, known for his political feud with Trump, introduced legislation earlier this year that aimed to strip Trump of his Secret Service detail after being convicted of falsifying business records. This move by Thompson attracted scrutiny in light of the recent events involving the former president.
The shooter who attempted to take Trump’s life has been identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. Crooks was fatally shot by a Secret Service counter-sniper after firing shots at Trump from a location near the rally.
Aside from the incident and staff termination, Thompson continues to lead the House committee responsible for investigating Trump’s alleged involvement in the January 6, 2021 Capitol insurrection. Thompson’s stance on Trump’s role in the events that transpired in Washington D.C. further highlights the ongoing tension between the two political figures.
Additionally, Marsaw’s comments and Thompson’s legislative actions have sparked discussions among various political figures, including Shad White, Mike Hurst, and Cheikh Taylor, within the Mississippi political landscape.
News outlets like USA Today Network and database services such as LexisNexis have provided coverage and background information on the individuals involved in the recent developments surrounding Thompson, Marsaw, and Trump.
