JAMNAGAR, India — Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Vantara, India’s largest animal rescue, conservation, and rehabilitation center, on March 3, 2025, coinciding with World Wildlife Day. This expansive 3,000-acre sanctuary in Gujarat is home to over 150,000 rescued animals, representing more than 2,000 species.

The facility, established by Reliance Industries and the Reliance Foundation, underscores the nation’s commitment to wildlife rehabilitation. During his visit, Modi emphasized the center’s advanced veterinary facilities, highlighting its role as a leader in animal welfare.

“Vantara reflects our dedication to wildlife conservation and rehabilitation,” Modi stated, after touring the modern on-site wildlife hospital equipped with MRI, CT scans, and ICU units. The hospital is divided into various specialized departments, including anesthesia, cardiology, and internal medicine.

Modi’s visit featured memorable moments as he interacted with several animal cubs. He played with and fed a white lion cub, a clouded leopard cub, and a caracal cub. The Prime Minister poignantly released rescued parrots back into the wild, symbolizing the center’s mission of rehabilitation.

“Rehabilitating wildlife is not just about saving animals; it’s about restoring the bond between nature and our lives,” Modi added during his interaction with the media.

Among significant activities observed was the treatment of an Asiatic lion undergoing an MRI scan and a leopard recovering from a car accident, highlighting the center’s dedication to cutting-edge animal medical care. Modi also encountered snow leopards, golden tigers, and spent time with elephants in hydrotherapy pools aimed at easing their ailments.

The impressive array of wildlife at Vantara includes rescued exotic species such as orangutans, hippos, giraffes, and unique cases like a two-headed snake and turtle. Highlights of the day also included Modi’s close engagement with a rhino calf and feeding activities with various animals.

Located near the Reliance Jamnagar Refinery, Vantara serves not only as a sanctuary but also as a breeding program for endangered species. The facility is designed with high standards of care, powered by a dedicated staff committed to animal welfare.

Reliance Foundation’s Anant Ambani emphasized the importance of Vantara, noting, “We aim for Vantara to set a benchmark in wildlife rehabilitation across the globe.”

The Prime Minister’s presence has drawn national attention to Vantara, enhancing its profile as a significant contributor to wildlife conservation efforts in India. His visit to the center aligns with global efforts to celebrate biodiversity and draw awareness to the challenges faced by endangered species.
