Montana Hangar Band Jazz Ensemble Soars To New Heights In Music Education Advocacy

The Hangar Band, an 18-piece big band jazz ensemble, has found a unique home at pilot Art Daniel‘s hangar located within the Woltermann Memorial Airport in Columbus, Montana. Meeting every other Monday, this group of talented musicians has come together in response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, utilizing the hangar space for socially distanced rehearsals.

Leading the band with his passion for aviation and music, Art Daniel, a retired Northwest Airlines pilot, has fostered a supportive environment for the ensemble to thrive. John Novotny, who unexpectedly found himself as the band’s director, shared his experience of joining the group and the immediate sense of camaraderie that enveloped him.

Despite members commuting from distant locations such as Cody, Wyoming, and Bozeman, the Hangar Band’s dedication to their craft shines through. Beyond their regular rehearsals, the band often performs to raise funds for music education programs across Montana, with proceeds supporting initiatives like those at Montana State University Billings.

Reflecting on the impact of music education, saxophone player Joe Acciani emphasized the long-term benefits that these programs provide, urging broader recognition of their importance within the community. With members boasting decades of musical experience, the band unites individuals who share a deep-rooted passion for playing music.

The Hangar Band’s upcoming performances, including gigs at local venues like Craft Local in Billings and the One-Legged Magpie in Red Lodge, continue to showcase their commitment to both music and philanthropy. From the Home School Ball at Swift River Ranch to the Hot Air Balloon Festival in Columbus, their schedule is packed with opportunities to engage with audiences and support charitable causes.

As they look ahead to future performances, such as the one at the Big Timber Legion Club in July, the Hangar Band remains a shining example of how music transcends boundaries, bringing people together for a common purpose.
