Muhammad Yunus Emphasizes Importance of Strong India-Bangladesh Relations
Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser to Bangladesh‘s interim government, has underscored the need for strong and harmonious relations between Bangladesh and India. According to Yunus, these ties remain crucial in the wake of recent political changes in Bangladesh. He asserted that close bilateral relations are indispensable for the mutual benefit of both nations.
Yunus, who is an esteemed 84-year-old economist, assumed the position of Chief Adviser on August 8, 2024, after the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Hasina reportedly left the country on August 5 amid widespread student-led protests. Speaking to the Bengali language daily, Prothom Alo, on Tuesday, Yunus emphasized, “Relations between the two countries must be very close. There can be no alternative to this. They need this, we need this. This is essential from any angle, whether it’s about economics, security, or water.”
The remarks come amid recent tensions in Bangladesh that have reportedly affected the bilateral ties. Yunus acknowledged these tensions by stating that certain incidents “might have disheartened” India, noting, “They were not pleased with the changes,” although he did not specify the incidents in question. He further articulated that it would be challenging for both nations to progress without each other, advocating for strong cooperation in all spheres.
In response to recent upheavals, India has urged the interim government of Bangladesh to ensure peace and security, especially relating to religious events for the Hindu community. A United Nations report highlighted that more than 600 individuals, including Hindus, lost their lives in the violent unrest following the departure of Hasina’s government. This call for stability comes as both countries navigate the complexities of their longstanding relationship amidst changing political landscapes.
