MultiChoice Group, in collaboration with the Western Cape police investigators, has successfully dismantled a major pirate internet streaming service known as Waka TV. This significant victory in the fight against internet streaming piracy marks a breakthrough in safeguarding content integrity.

The meticulously planned raid on 31 May led to the apprehension of a key suspect linked to one of the most extensive pirate operations in Africa. Identified through a substantial investment by Irdeto, the suspect allegedly managed several pirate customers and resellers involved in illegally distributing live TV channels, including DStv content, movies, and series.

The arrest of the suspect, facing charges of fraud and cybercrimes, has initiated further investigations into the thousands of individuals connected to the Waka TV pirate network. Resellers supporting the illicit streaming operation are also under scrutiny in a collaborative effort to dismantle the entire network and bring perpetrators to justice.

Following an appearance in court on 3 June, the arrested individual is currently facing charges under the Cybercrime Act, with additional charges being considered in consultation with the senior public prosecutor. The Western Cape cybercrime unit is conducting a comprehensive analysis of the seized equipment to uncover insights into the extent of the pirate network, with more arrests anticipated.

MultiChoice Group commended the cybercrime unit and the Western Cape provincial commercial crime investigation unit for their support and professionalism throughout the operation. The disruption caused to Waka TV poses a significant blow to the illegal streaming industry in Africa, highlighting the company’s commitment to combating piracy and ensuring content protection.
