Multiple Earthquakes Rock Indonesia on November 20, 2025
JAYAPURA, Indonesia — A series of earthquakes struck various regions of Indonesia on Thursday, November 20, 2025, with the strongest measuring 5.9 in magnitude near Ambon, Maluku. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported the quake at approximately 1:19 PM local time.
Another tremor of 5.3 magnitude was registered just minutes earlier near Ternate, North Maluku, showcasing the area’s significant seismic activity. In total, 467 earthquakes were recorded across the country within the last 24 hours, including three above 5.0 magnitude, the EMSC stated.
The tremors led to panic among residents, but there were no immediate reports of severe damage. Authorities are still assessing the impact as aftershocks continue to rattle parts of the country. “Although the earthquakes were alarming, it appears that we have avoided major catastrophes for now,” said Ahmad, a local resident.
The Indonesian government continues to monitor the situation closely. Furthermore, experts remind citizens to stay prepared, as the region is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, regularly experiencing such geological events.
The total seismic energy released from these events is estimated at 5.7 x 10^13 joules, roughly equivalent to 0.8 atomic bombs. Seismologists anticipate further activity, given the geological nature of the region.
