Muslim Media Watch Group Criticizes Senate’s Passing of National Anthem Bill

The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria (MMWG) has expressed disapproval of the recent decision by the Senate to pass the Bill reverting the nation to the old national anthem of 1960. The group criticized the hasty manner in which the Senate handled the issue, describing it as unpopular and lacking in the required support of the majority of Nigerians.

In a statement signed by its national coordinator, Malam Ibrahim Abdullahi, and national secretary, Dr. Nasir Balogun, the MMWG highlighted the Senate’s decision as a misplaced priority. They emphasized that issues of national importance, such as welfare and infrastructure, should take precedence over the national anthem debate.

The group aligned its views with the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), who had raised concerns about the hastiness of the Senate’s decision on the national anthem. Fagbemi emphasized the need for broader consultations and public input before making such significant changes.

The Muslim Media Watch Group called on President Bola Tinubu to disregard the Bill and concentrate on economic and social development initiatives. They urged Tinubu to focus on enhancing workers’ pay, improving pension packages for senior citizens, and addressing the power situation in the country.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, confirmed that President Bola Tinubu signed the Bill at a joint sitting of the National Assembly. The signing coincided with Tinubu’s first anniversary as president, further solidifying the reversion to the old national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.” Despite the reservations raised by stakeholders like Lateef Fagbemi, the Senate proceeded with the legislation.

The National Anthem Bill 2024, sponsored by the Leader of the House, Julius Ihonvbare, saw rapid progress in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. This move officially reinstates the old national anthem, composed during Nigeria’s independence in 1960, as the country’s anthem.
