National Doctor’s Day is a significant annual observance in India, dedicated to recognizing and appreciating the contributions of physicians to society. Celebrated on July 1st each year, the day commemorates the birth and death anniversary of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, a revered physician, freedom fighter, and ex-Chief Minister of West Bengal.

Dr. Roy, a key figure in the establishment of esteemed medical institutions in India including the Indian Medical Association and the Medical Council of India, was bestowed with the prestigious Bharat Ratna for his exceptional contributions to the healthcare sector.

In 1991, the Government of India officially declared July 1st as National Doctor’s Day to honor Dr. Roy’s legacy of professionalism, compassion, and dedication to healthcare and public health in India.

As the date approaches, the theme for the 2024 celebration has been announced as ‘Healing Hands, Caring Hearts,’ highlighting the unwavering commitment and empathy demonstrated by doctors in their medical practice.

National Doctor’s Day serves as a pivotal platform to acknowledge the indispensable role of doctors in enhancing healthcare and to recognize their invaluable service to society, particularly evident during challenging times such as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
