New ABC Series ‘Doctor Odyssey’ Brings Unique Twist to Medical Procedurals
From the creative mind of Ryan Murphy, “Doctor Odyssey,” a high-energy procedural drama, is set to premiere on Thursday, September 26, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC, with streaming available the next day on Hulu. “Doctor Odyssey” introduces viewers to Max Bankman, portrayed by Joshua Jackson, who takes on the role of a fresh on-board doctor working on a luxury cruise ship. The cast also includes notable characters such as Captain Robert Massey, played by Don Johnson, and nurses Avery Morgan and Tristan Silva, brought to life by Phillipa Soo and Sean Teale, respectively.
According to Jon Robin Baitz, the writer and executive producer of the series alongside Murphy and Joe Baken, “Doctor Odyssey” fuses traditional network show elements with a modern touch. Baitz describes the series as an engaging mix of humor and depth, addressing contemporary issues like emotional states, gender dynamics, and hedonism. “It feels like a new way of doing something wonderfully old school,” Baitz added, highlighting the unique approach of the show.
The release of the “Doctor Odyssey” trailer on September 17 spurred significant anticipation, garnering 77.8 million views within 48 hours. This response marked it as the most-watched trailer for a new network television show, reflecting the show’s potential to capture broad audience appeal. ABC’s recent success as a leading network in entertainment among Adults 18-49 further complements the timing of this show’s debut.
Executive producers and seasoned actors, Joshua Jackson and Don Johnson, bring extensive television experience to the series. Jackson is well-recognized for his roles in “Dawson’s Creek,” “Fringe,” and “The Affair,” while Johnson is celebrated for his performances in “Miami Vice” and “Nash Bridges.” Baitz praised their “smart, charming, wise, and easy-going” nature, highlighting their ability to steer the show’s dynamics and contribute meaningfully to the production process.
The setting aboard a luxury cruise ship allows “Doctor Odyssey” to feature a rotating cast of guest stars, including celebrities such as Kelsea Ballerini, Rachel Dratch, Gina Gershon, Laura Harrier, Cheyenne Jackson, Chord Overstreet, John Stamos, and Shania Twain. Baitz expressed his enthusiasm for casting, mentioning that his theatrical background aids in assembling a vibrant and dynamic ensemble for the series.
Viewers can expect a blend of intrigue and excitement as the series progresses, with storylines promising to delve into the evolving relationships between its main characters and their complex emotional journeys. Baitz hinted at “fun and tragedy, heroic medical thinking, fast action, heartbreak, feuds, love, as well as marvelous costumes,” as core components of the series, ensuring it offers a blend of entertainment and depth to its audience.
