The book draws on over 200 interviews, providing purported insider accounts of Biden’s mental state during his re-election bid.

Tapper, who moderated the pivotal June 2024 presidential debate, highlighted the significance of this project in understanding the factors leading to the Democratic loss. “Toni Morrison once said, ‘If there’s a book that you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it,’” Tapper explained. “That’s what inspired this book: we wanted to know more about what we all just lived through.”

The book critiques the circumstances surrounding Biden’s performance, arguing that it was indicative of a long-standing decline rather than a momentary lapse, stating, “What the world saw at Joe Biden’s one and only debate was not an anomaly.”

In the text, the authors point to an internal struggle among Democratic leaders, who, they argue, ignored growing concerns about Biden’s age and health, ultimately contributing to the party’s defeat. “Biden, his family, and his team let their self-interest and fear of another Trump term justify trying to put an at times addled old man in the Oval Office for four more years,” they wrote.
