NEW ORLEANS, LA – The New Orleans Pelicans finalized their regular-season roster Monday, revealing significant changes as they prepare for their season opener on Wednesday against Memphis. The roster highlights six key players who were not with the team last season, including projected starters Zion Williamson, Trey Murphy III, and Herbert Jones, who collectively missed 143 games last season.

Last year’s squad limped to a disappointing 21-61 record, and with the new lineup, Coach Willie Green believes the team has a chance to rebound. ‘I love the connectivity of this group,’ Green said following practice. ‘We’re working hard and adapting quickly, which will help us start the season strong.’

Three players, including current point guard and trade acquisition Kevon Looney, are sidelined with injuries as the season begins. Though the team has experienced significant injury challenges in recent years, Green is optimistic about the blend of seasoned players and newcomers.

The Pelicans’ success hinges on the health of key players like Williamson, a two-time All-Star. When he played 70 games two seasons ago, the team made the playoffs. In contrast, his participation dropped to just 30 games in the previous season, contributing to the team’s poor performance.

Defensively, Jones, a first-team All-NBA defender two years ago, is pivotal for the team. His ability to guard opposing players makes him influential on and off the court. Meanwhile, Murphy’s growing skill set extends beyond his sharpshooting, adding versatility to the roster.

The Pelicans strengthened their backcourt by trading for dynamic guard Jordan Poole. His return from a recent injury is anticipated to address early-season needs as he adapts to his new role.

Young talents like Derik Queen, the team’s second lottery pick, are expected to step up, especially during injuries. Coaches plan to monitor his progress closely as he adjusts to the NBA.

Overall, the Pelicans are aiming for a return to form, with goals to surpass their last season’s record and strive for playoff contention. The coming months will be essential in assessing their potential.
