Newly appointed Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu, has outlined a comprehensive strategy to combat the escalating levels of crime in South Africa. In a press briefing held ahead of his parliamentary budget vote presentation, Mchunu emphasized the urgency of taking decisive action to address crime across the country.

Mchunu highlighted that contact crimes, including murders, rapes, hijackings, and kidnappings for ransom, are among the most prevalent offenses in South Africa. He expressed deep concern over the continued violence against women and children and stressed the need for a strong law enforcement response.

Addressing the regional variations in crime dynamics, Mchunu acknowledged the need for a province-specific approach to crafting a national crime prevention strategy. He underlined the importance of tough measures to combat crime effectively and ensure the safety of all citizens.

Specifically noting the surge in gang violence in the Western Cape, Mchunu pledged to prioritize efforts to curb criminal activities in areas such as the Cape Flats, Khayelitsha, Nelson Mandela Bay, and certain parts of Gauteng. He also committed to tackling construction mafias that disrupt infrastructure development through extortion and illegal activities.

During his first week in office, Mchunu engaged with top police officials, provincial commissioners, and various law enforcement agencies, including the Hawks, Independent Police Investigative Directorate, and the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority. He emphasized the need to enhance professionalism and ethical values within the police service.

Mchunu underscored the importance of maintaining public trust in the police force by cracking down on corruption and misconduct among officers. He emphasized the need for well-resourced police stations, adequate training, and the deployment of new technologies to enhance crime prevention and response.

The minister highlighted the crucial role of crime intelligence in policing and indicated a need for increased investment in this area. He emphasized the integration of advanced technologies, such as data analytics and artificial intelligence, to strengthen law enforcement capabilities in combating modern criminal activities.
