Phantom Of The Opera Halloween Theater

NEW YORK, NY — As Halloween approaches, New Yorkers are eager for thrills on stage, as evidenced by two fresh adaptations of “The Phantom of the Opera.” The first of these adaptations premiered last week, making it easy for audiences to enjoy live theater from their computers.

In addition to the Phantom revival, five theatrical works were reviewed this past week, including the long-awaited star-studded staged reading of John Patrick Shanley’s “Italian-American Reconciliation,” taking place at the Music Box Theater on November 10. This benefit performance for New York Stage and Film aims to attract theater fans with fresh interpretations of classic works.

Saul Rubinek, an acclaimed actor, finally stepped into the role of Shylock in “The Merchant of Venice.” However, his performance was cut short due to community complaints regarding antisemitism in the play. Instead of completing his final show, Rubinek spoke candidly about the themes of antisemitism and censorship, reflecting on both the play’s history and his own experiences as a Jewish actor.

The innovative Theater of Quarantine is also gaining attention with a livestream production of “Phantom of the Opera,” led by Joshua William Gelb. Gelb highlighted the audience’s frequent inquiries about yet another adaptation of the classic story during a live-streamed session, where he also prepared with theatrical makeup.

Meanwhile, the Boxcutter Collective is presenting a whimsical and politically charged show titled “Dimension Zero” at HERE Arts Center, showcasing a mix of puppetry and musical numbers. “Dimension Zero” offers viewers a unique blend of creativity, encouraging laughter while addressing serious themes.

Additionally, the revival of “Italian-American Reconciliation” features an ensemble cast, including Mary Testa, who brings humor and depth to her character. Directed by Austin Pendleton, the production captures the trials of love and relationships in a way that resonates with many.

As the theater community gears up for a busy season, upcoming performances including “Proof,” featuring Don Cheadle, are set to open at Broadway’s Booth Theater on April 16, further highlighting the return of live theater.
