Newquay Charity Volunteers Step Down Amidst False Accusations
The future of an award-winning Newquay-based charity, DISC Newquay, which assists individuals in need, is currently in jeopardy. This follows the announcement that its volunteers will be stepping down due to what they claim are false accusations. Monique Collins, the head of DISC Newquay, expressed her distress over the situation, indicating she plans to leave her role after Christmas alongside her fellow volunteers.
Monique Collins, who has been managing the charity from Sandy Lodge Hotel, highlighted how repeated false allegations have targeted the charity. These allegations were reported to the Charity Commission, further compounded by attempts to revoke the charity’s prestigious King's Award.
Collins, in a heartfelt message on social media, shared, “I have run DISC for over seven years and poured my heart into this community. Despite our proven innocence, the constant reports from ‘keyboard warriors’ have been the last straw for me and my team.”
DISC Newquay, known for its crucial community services such as providing meals, clothing, and shelter, is faced with uncertainty regarding its continuity as the trustees now need to decide its future. Collins noted that finding new leadership and securing funds are critical hurdles, as there have been no offers for the “monster charity,” and funding opportunities remain scarce.
The charity’s current headquarters, Sandy Lodge Hotel, has announced that it will take back the premises once the volunteers leave, although Collins expressed gratitude for their support. Collins reiterated her commitment to making the upcoming Christmas special, marking a final significant effort by the current volunteer team.
In her concluding remarks, Collins stated, “I want this Christmas to be memorable as we say goodbye. I hope the community will support me and make this a reality.”
