NFL Preseason Week 2: Quarterback Battles Heat Up

INDIANAPOLIS — NFL Preseason Week 2 kicked off Saturday, showcasing quarterback competitions and emerging talent across the league. Coaches increased playing time for starters, providing crucial evaluations as teams prepare for the regular season.
Among the most closely watched matchups was the San Francisco 49ers against the Las Vegas Raiders. Quarterback Brock Purdy completed 5 of 7 passes for 66 yards during his single series, leading the team to a field goal. He demonstrated chemistry with rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, but 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan indicated that Purdy might not see much more action this preseason.
The Cleveland Browns featured rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who made his debut against the Raiders. Gabriel completed 13 of 18 passes for 143 yards but also threw a pick-six and lost a fumble. Despite his struggles, Gabriel remained optimistic, stating, “my job is to compete.”
The Indianapolis Colts continue their own quarterback battle, with Daniel Jones starting Saturday and completing 7 of 11 passes for 101 yards. Rookie Anthony Richardson took the field later, showing promise with 6 of 11 completions for 73 yards. Coach Shane Steichen noted that a decision on the starting quarterback is coming soon.
Chargers fans finally saw Justin Herbert play in a preseason game for the first time, albeit during a limited appearance against the Rams. The Chargers are installing a new offense under coach Jim Harbaugh, which emphasizes a more physical style of play.
Injuries also shaped the day’s action, with the 49ers losing starting right guard Dominic Puni to a knee injury and Dolphins running back De’Von Achane sidelined by a soft tissue issue. The Panthers faced a serious setback as rookie Nic Scourton sustained a collapsed lung during practice.
As teams prepare for their final preseason games, Week 2 has provided essential insights into player performances and potential roster decisions ahead of the regular season.
