Scotland’s political landscape faced a new twist as Peter Murrell, the husband of former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, was rearrested by Police Scotland in connection with the ongoing investigation into the finances of the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Murrell, who previously served as the SNP’s chief executive for 22 years, had been initially arrested in April 2023 at his home in Glasgow but was released later that day pending further inquiry.

The investigation, known as Operation Branchform, has also seen other key figures linked to the SNP come under scrutiny, including Colin Beattie, the party’s former treasurer and SNP MSP.

Following a series of complaints regarding the handling of donations totaling £667,000 earmarked for a pro-independence fighting fund, questions arose about the transparency of the SNP’s financial practices.

In a coordinated effort, police searches were conducted at the SNP headquarters in Edinburgh and the properties of Murrell and Beattie, adding to the intensity of the investigation.

In a further development, Nicola Sturgeon herself was arrested in June as part of the inquiry but was released without charge, maintaining her position that the investigation is unrelated to her decision to step down as Scotland’s first minister in March 2023.

As the investigation unfolds, with Murrell’s recent rearrest, there is heightened anticipation and scrutiny surrounding the operations of the SNP and the individuals involved.

Jackie Baillie, Scottish Labour’s deputy leader, emphasized the need for an unhindered investigation by Police Scotland to ensure transparency and accountability in Scotland’s political sphere.

The SNP has seen internal discord on financial matters, with high-profile resignations such as Douglas Chapman and Joanna Cherry, reflecting a period of upheaval within the party’s financial management.
