Nigeria has found itself at the center of controversy following the signing of the Samoa Agreement, which has sparked outrage over its implications for sovereignty and values. Minister Atiku Bagudu confirmed Nigeria’s involvement in the agreement, leading to calls for immediate withdrawal.

The Samoa Agreement, signed on November 15, 2023, in Samoa, has raised concerns over its provisions legalizing LGBT rights, transgenderism, abortion, and teen sexual abuse in African countries. The move has been viewed as a betrayal of Nigerian values and a threat to the nation’s way of life.

The European Union‘s role in pressuring African countries to sign the agreement has been heavily criticized, with allegations of economic coercion and threats of sanctions for non-compliance. The lack of understanding among Nigerian officials who signed the agreement has also been questioned, highlighting potential lapses in decision-making processes.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan‘s stance on same-sex relationships, as demonstrated through legislation passed in 2014 criminalizing such acts, contrasts with the recent developments surrounding the Samoa Agreement. The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has reiterated its position on LGBT issues, further adding to the complexity of the debate.

The People’s Redemption Party (PRP) has emerged as a vocal critic of Nigeria’s involvement in the Samoa Agreement, calling for swift withdrawal and condemning the agreement as a product of external pressure. The National Assembly has been urged to investigate the circumstances surrounding the signing of the agreement and hold accountable the officials responsible.
