Ninth-Grade Student Dies by Gunshot During School Field Trip in Provo

PROVO, Utah — A ninth-grade student died Wednesday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a school field trip in Provo Canyon. The incident occurred at South Fork Park around 1 p.m., as other students and faculty members witnessed the tragedy.
Initially, investigators were uncertain whether the shooting was an intentional act or an accident. However, the Utah County Sheriff's Office announced Thursday that it was determined the shooting was deliberate, based partially on witness statements.
The investigation into how the student obtained the firearm is ongoing, and specifics about the student have not been released. Fortunately, no other students were harmed during the incident.
The Alpine School District confirmed that the student attended Canyon View Junior High. In a statement, the district expressed its commitment to offering counseling services to students and families affected by this event. “We know that adolescents can grieve, process, and recover better when they have a trusted adult to guide them,” the district said.
Classes at Canyon View Junior High will proceed as scheduled on Thursday and Friday, although parent-teacher conferences originally planned for Thursday have been canceled. The district praised the administrative team for their professionalism and compassion during this difficult time.
