North Georgia Mountains Snow Weather

ATLANTA, Ga. — A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 7 a.m. Tuesday for several counties in North Georgia, including Fannin, Gilmer, Dawson, and others, as snow and freezing temperatures approach the region.

Forecasters predict snow accumulations of up to one inch in the north central, northeast, and northwest parts of the state. Higher elevations may see more than one inch of snow due to an influx of cold Arctic air.

Wind gusts are expected to reach up to 35 miles per hour, leading to potential frost and freezing conditions that could damage crops and unprotected outdoor plumbing. Residents are urged to protect vulnerable plants and take precautions with plumbing.

The FOX 5 Storm Team cautioned that while Metro Atlanta may not see significant snowfall, some flurries might occur. As temperatures are expected to dip into the 20s overnight, residents are advised to be cautious of slick road conditions as freezing may affect wet surfaces.

Many school districts in North Georgia are adjusting their schedules due to the winter weather. Dawson County Schools will dismiss students early, with sixth through twelfth grades releasing at 1:30 p.m. and kindergarten through fifth grades leaving at 2 p.m.

Fannin County Schools will also have an early dismissal Monday, canceling all after-school activities. Gilmer County Schools are scheduled to let out an hour early, and Lumpkin County has also canceled their afterschool programs.

The National Weather Service has warned that temperatures are expected to rebound throughout the week. By Friday and Saturday, highs in metro Atlanta may reach near 70 degrees, following a period of dry and pleasant weather.

As the region prepares for the freezing conditions, local warming centers have opened to support residents during this cold snap. Atlanta plans to operate two warming centers, accessible starting at 8 p.m. Monday.
