WILLIAMSBRIDGE, The Bronx — An NYPD sergeant was shot while responding to a robbery in the Williamsbridge section of the Bronx on Thursday night, police said.

The incident occurred shortly after 10:20 p.m. at 1015 E. Gun Hill Rd. Reports indicate that the sergeant, assigned to the 49th Precinct, was shot in the head by a suspect firing from a window.

Law enforcement sources confirmed that the injured officer was quickly transported to Jacobi Hospital. As of now, the sergeant is alert and conscious.

A person of interest has been taken into custody, although details about that individual have not been released. The investigation into the shooting is still ongoing.

Authorities have advised residents to avoid the area of the shooting as they continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the event.
