Onam: Celebrating the Return of King Mahabali
India is known for its grand festivals, and one of the most celebrated among them, particularly in Kerala, is Onam. This significant festival commemorates the legendary return of King Mahabali, a beloved figure in Hindu mythology, celebrated with great enthusiasm.
According to Hindu legends, after Indra was defeated by Mahabali, the devas sought refuge in Vishnu. To restore Indra’s power, Vishnu incarnated as a dwarf priest named Vamana. He requested only three feet of land from Mahabali, who agreed. Vamana then grew in size to encompass the universe in just three strides. Thus, the three worlds were restored to Indra, while Mahabali and the asuras were banished to the netherworld. However, due to Mahabali’s deep affection for his subjects, Vamana granted his wish to visit his kingdom once every year.
Onam is celebrated on Dwadashi Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada, under Shravana Nakshatra. This year, the grand harvest festival falls on Sunday, September 15, marking the beginning of the Malayalam calendar year. The festival is highlighted by a variety of activities including Pookalam (floral rangoli), the grand Onam Sadhya feast, and traditional cultural dances.
This vibrant harvest festival is a time of joy and is marked by the sharing of heartfelt wishes and greetings. Many partake in exchanging messages, GIFs, and images with friends and loved ones to celebrate this auspicious occasion.
