Oprah Winfrey Democratic National Convention

Oprah Winfrey, the renowned media mogul and talk show host, delivered a powerful endorsement for Vice President Kamala Harris at the Democratic National Convention held in Chicago.

The event took place on the third day of the convention, where Winfrey captivated a large audience with her emphatic support for Harris. This marked Winfrey’s inaugural speech at a political convention, during which she expressed her commitment to help elect Kamala Harris as the next President of the United States.

In her speech, Winfrey emphasized the importance of decency and respect in the upcoming election. She stated, “Decency and respect are on the ballot in 2024,” underscoring the significance of Harris and Tim Walz in delivering these values to the American people.

Winfrey shared her personal experiences with division and inequity across various states, including Mississippi, Tennessee, and California. She reflected on how these issues have affected her life and highlighted the resilience of the American people who, despite their differences, come together to lend support in difficult times.

Winfrey honored past civil rights advocates, including the late Congressman John Lewis and Prevost Williams, who fought for equality and social justice. She noted that Williams’ activism contributed to the path that allowed Harris to attend an integrated public school.

According to Winfrey, the values of justice and freedom were instilled in Harris as a young girl, which inspired her to challenge authority and empower others. Winfrey confidently predicted that Harris would become the 47th President of the United States.

Oprah Winfrey’s endorsement is viewed as a significant milestone for the Harris campaign, especially given the influence known as the “Oprah effect,” which has previously proven impactful in shaping public opinion during key elections.

Throughout her career, Winfrey has selectively endorsed political candidates, including Barack Obama in 2008. Research indicates that her endorsement during that election translated to approximately one million votes for Obama.

In addition to supporting Harris, Winfrey has been a vocal advocate for voting access, particularly for Black women, founding the “OWN Your Vote” initiative to combat voter suppression across the nation.

By attending the convention and endorsing Harris, Winfrey aims to rally support for the Democratic ticket as the election approaches.
