Pakistan Election Results 2024 Declared Amid Controversy
The results of the Pakistan general elections 2024 have been declared by the Election Commission amid a cloud of controversy. The National Assembly is currently led by the PTI party supported by independent candidates, securing the most seats in the initial count.
Despite the slow count, the prevailing lack of a clear majority for any political party paints a picture of lingering political instability in Pakistan. Voting in the general elections concluded on Thursday amidst allegations of electoral malpractice, sporadic violence, and mobile internet shutdowns in the country.
It has been announced that independent candidates have won the highest number of seats – 99 out of 250 seats in the National Assembly. Most of these candidates are backed by the PTI party led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan. PML-N has secured 71 seats, PPP has 53 seats, and the MMA has secured 17 seats.
The possibility of a coalition government between the PPP and the PML-N to form a government in the Punjab and central provinces has been agreed upon. The meeting occurred after talks between PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto and former President Asif Ali Zardari. According to party sources, Shahbaz met with the PPP’s top leaders at the residence of Punjab’s acting Chief Minister Mohsin Nakvi.
The National Assembly has a total of 336 seats, with voting on 266 seats completed. However, elections were postponed in Bajaur following the death of a candidate during an attack. Another 60 seats are reserved for women and 10 seats for minorities, allocated based on proportional representation to winning parties.
