Patriots Coach Vrabel Addresses Issues with Rookie Players

Kyle Williams Patriots Practice

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel is not placing blame on rookie wide receiver Kyle Williams for his lack of production on the field this preseason.

During a joint practice against the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday, Williams had more opportunities with the second-team unit but did not make a significant impact. In the preseason opener against the Washington Commanders, he was targeted four times but failed to record a reception.

Backup quarterback Joshua Dobbs missed several throws, including a clear touchdown opportunity to Williams. “He has been open. There’s been separation,” said Vrabel. “As long as the targets are there, the production should come sooner rather than later.”

Williams has shown promise with his speed and playmaking abilities. Though he did not catch any passes in the opener, he has consistently separated himself from defenders during training camp. Vrabel remains hopeful that Williams will make an impact during the regular season.

Meanwhile, the Patriots’ incoming wide receiver depth is shaping up, with critical weeks ahead for Williams to ascend the depth chart. A string of positive performances will be essential for his development.

In another development, Vrabel commented on the future of safety Kyle Dugger, suggesting a possible shift to linebacker. Since joining the Patriots in 2020, Dugger has secured 65 starts but is facing competition from rookie Craig Woodson, who has shone in training camp.

Dugger battled an ankle injury last season, yet managed 81 tackles. With a deep safety group now in New England, including Woodson and veterans like Jabrill Peppers, any change in position for Dugger might be necessary for his future with the team.
