In a recent update on a developing case in Kentucky, the State Police have announced that a body found near Exit 49 in Laurel County is believed to be Joseph Couch. Couch has been the primary suspect in a shooting incident on Interstate 75.

Kentucky State Police Commissioner Phillip Burnett Jr. stated that although investigations continue, evidence found with the body, including an unspecified weapon, suggests it might be Couch. On the day of the discovery, Fred and Sheila McCoy, local residents, were searching the area when they met a group of State Police troopers. The body was discovered shortly thereafter due to a strong odor in the area.

The body has been transported to Frankfort for identification, which is expected soon. State Senator Brandon Storm released a statement Thursday morning, thanking law enforcement and acknowledging the efforts of Fred and Sheila McCoy. He expressed hope that the community’s fear is soon laid to rest “after nearly two weeks of unrest.”

This significant police operation commenced after a shooting incident on September 7. Reports indicated that multiple vehicles were fired upon, resulting in five injuries. These events caused significant disruption, including the temporary closure of part of the interstate for the investigation.

Joseph Couch was identified as a suspect shortly after the incident, with authorities discovering his vehicle and an AR-15 near the scene. It was reported that Couch purchased the weapon and ammunition from a local store on the morning of the shooting day. He also sent a text to the mother of his child expressing his intent to harm himself.

Officials have suggested that Couch, a former Army Reserves member, had been eluding capture for almost 12 days, evading search efforts across thousands of acres of rugged terrain. Laurel County authorities had placed a $35,000 reward for information leading to Couch.

The shooting affected the community significantly, highlighting a need for continued vigilance and comprehensive efforts toward public safety. Laurel County, located in southeastern Kentucky, is a region known for parts of the Daniel Boone National Forest and is positioned well for economic growth with its existing industry infrastructure.
