Poll Shows Indifference to Kamala Harris’s Potential Gubernatorial Run

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (TNND) — A recent poll conducted by Politico and the UC Berkeley Citrin Center reveals that California political insiders display a sense of indifference toward former Vice President Kamala Harris’s potential bid for governor. Harris has not officially announced her candidacy to succeed current Governor Gavin Newsom, who is term-limited and cannot run again in 2026.
The survey included opinions from California voters as well as a group of influential policy insiders, including state lawmakers and their staff. According to Politico, the feedback from this group was largely nonchalant, with 36% of respondents choosing ‘indifferent’ to describe their feelings about a Governor Harris.
“This group of in-the-know politicos was notably blasé about the prospect of a Governor Harris,” the publication noted. While 4% expressed outrage at the idea, registered Democratic voters appeared more enthusiastic—33% reported feeling ‘joyful’ and another 44% feeling ‘mostly excited’ about her potential candidacy. In contrast, many Republican voters stated they would feel ‘irritated’ or ‘outraged’ should Harris choose to run.
Harris, who has deep roots in California politics, remains a significant figure despite the lukewarm response. Other candidates are already campaigning for the position, including Xavier Becerra, former Secretary of Health and Human Services. Becerra aims to “rebuild the California Dream for everyone,” underscoring his experience as a former state attorney general and congressman. “Honestly, look, speeches and fancy announcements can wait. Right now, what can’t wait is that California Dream. Real change comes with our participation,” he stated in a recent video.
In addition to Becerra, other contenders are positioning themselves ahead of the upcoming election, further complicating Harris’s chances should she decide to enter the race. Political analysts in California note that while Harris brings national recognition, her past campaign struggles may weigh against her.
In a broader context, Harris’s potential gubernatorial run aligns with discussions about her future in the political landscape, particularly in light of fluctuating support within the Democratic Party. Polling conducted from April 10 to April 14 indicates that Harris, while currently leading in recognition, has seen a slight dip in support, down 5% from March. Senator Cory Booker has emerged as a contender, with a double-digit increase in support attributed to his recent speeches advocating for various issues.
The political atmosphere surrounding potential candidates continues to evolve. Harris’s position is influenced not only by her achievements but also by the sentiments of California voters and party insiders, who will play key roles in the election cycle.
