VATICAN CITY, April 21, 2025 — Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, has died at the age of 88, the Vatican announced Monday morning. The tragic news comes after the Pope struggled with health issues, particularly a severe respiratory illness due to bronchitis, from which he had been recovering since March.

In a video statement, Cardinal Kevin Ferrell, the Vatican camerlengo, stated, “At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church.” Pope Francis had been discharged from a health facility on March 24 after his condition improved.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was elected as the 266th pontiff on March 13, 2013. Throughout his papacy, he was known for advocating reforms within the Church and addressing pressing societal issues such as climate change, refugees, and poverty.
