President Ramaphosa Emphasizes Universal Human Rights Ahead Of Human Rights Day

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has underscored the significance of universal human rights ahead of the country’s commemoration of Human Rights Day later this week. In his weekly newsletter address, President Ramaphosa reiterated that true freedom can only be achieved when all individuals have the opportunity to exercise their basic rights.

President Ramaphosa highlighted the global humanitarian challenge, emphasizing the worsening human rights conditions pervasive in many regions worldwide. He emphasized the moral obligation to advocate for human rights not just for South Africans but for all individuals globally.

Reflecting on the enduring impact of apartheid in South Africa, President Ramaphosa acknowledged the persisting disparities across various sectors, including education, healthcare, and socio-economic development. He noted that while strides have been made over the past three decades to address the legacy of apartheid, there remains work to be done.

President Ramaphosa pointed to the release of Census 2022 data, which showcased the country’s progress in upholding the rights enshrined in the Constitution. He praised pro-poor policies that have lifted millions out of poverty and improved access to essential services for the majority of the population.

As the nation prepares for its 7th democratic election this year, President Ramaphosa emphasized the freedoms enjoyed by South Africans, including political rights, freedom of expression, and a robust independent media sector. He urged unity in advancing human rights and confronting societal challenges.

The President urged honest reflection on shortcomings and a collective effort to address issues such as lack of access to services, unemployment, and inequality, which impact the fundamental right to dignity for many South Africans.
