Reese Witherspoon has provided an update on the highly anticipated potential third season of the HBO series “Big Little Lies,” during a recent appearance at the Hello Sunshine red carpet event on October 5. The actress confirmed that both she and her co-star Nicole Kidman are eagerly awaiting new content from the show’s original author, Liane Moriarty.

“Nicole and I have been waiting,” the 48-year-old actress told E! News. “We’re in waiting for Liane Moriarty. She’s going to be turning in something very soon. We’re back to the original author and we’re going to go back to the original characters.” Witherspoon expressed excitement at the prospect of the show’s young characters growing older, adding a new dimension to the storyline, although she admitted she hasn’t yet read the new material.

Nicole Kidman, 57, confirmed that progress was being made on a new installment of the series during a Vanity Fair interview in June. Kidman had initially announced plans for another season last November at a Ladies Professional Golf Association Q&A event. She acknowledged at the time that she might have been overly zealous in sharing the news prematurely. “I got excited,” Kidman admitted. “But we are now! We’re moving fast and furious, and Liane is delivering the book.”

While Kidman is optimistic, she and her castmates, who include Laura Dern, Zoe Kravitz, and Shailene Woodley, are keen to keep details under wraps. “We need to shut up,” Kidman remarked. “There’s this whole thing that you should never talk about something until you’ve done it. If you talk about doing it, it’s the dopamine hit of doing it. You feel like you’ve done it. It’s a scientific study.”

Kravitz expressed doubts about a third season following the death of the show’s visionary director, Jean-Marc Vallée, in 2021. Speaking to GQ in November 2022, she said, “We talked about doing a season three a lot and, unfortunately, Jean-Marc Vallée, our incredible director, passed away this last year and I just can’t imagine going on without him. He really was the visionary for that show.”

As fans eagerly await further updates, the show’s future remains uncertain, but the original cast’s enthusiasm for a new season offers hope for its eventual return to Monterey.
