Reports Question Michael Schumacher’s Attendance at Daughter’s Wedding
A prominent neurosurgeon has expressed skepticism regarding recent reports claiming that former Formula One champion Michael Schumacher attended his daughter’s wedding in Majorca. Gina Schumacher recently wed Iain Bethke at the family’s luxury villa on the Spanish island, with guests reportedly having traveled from various parts of the world to attend the celebration.
According to reports, guests were asked to surrender their mobile phones to prevent photographs of Michael Schumacher from being taken. The 55-year-old racing icon has been absent from the public eye since sustaining a severe brain injury during a skiing accident in the French Alps in December 2013. He underwent two critical brain surgeries at Grenoble Hospital and has since been under the constant care of his wife, Corinna Schumacher, with very restricted access for visitors.
Jussi Posti, head of the neurosurgery and traumatic brain injury department at Turku University Hospital in Finland, spoke to the Finnish publication Iltalehti about the likelihood of Schumacher’s presence at the event. Posti expressed doubts regarding Schumacher’s ability to attend due to the severity of his condition as widely reported. “If a hospital has been built in his house, with everything medicalised around him, it seems that he has been in hospital most of the time. Based on the information available, I don’t think he leads a very active life,” Posti stated.
Posti further explained that bedridden patients like Schumacher typically become too frail and stiff to move unaided after long periods. He indicated that the limited updates on Schumacher’s condition over the years suggest no significant changes, owing to the restricted access to the German former racing driver. “It suggests that he has probably been in the same condition for the last decade. Typically, patients recover what they can for up to two years, and then the level of recovery is usually set,” Posti added.
