Reshuffle in Downing Street: McSweeney Takes Over from Sue Gray

Keir Starmer Press Conference

The reshuffle within Keir Starmer‘s government has led to Morgan McSweeney replacing Sue Gray as Chief of Staff. The move marks a significant shift in the leadership dynamics at Downing Street. Relations between Gray and the rest of Starmer’s closely knit political team were reportedly strained, particularly during Labour’s early days in government. This change is viewed as a fresh start for the team that drove the party’s successful election strategy.

Sue Gray, known as the ‘guardian of ethics’ in Starmer’s administration, faced considerable challenges in her role. She was instrumental in structuring the team within No. 10, managing donor vetting, and overseeing key appointments. However, some within the party alleged that Gray bore disproportionate blame for the administration’s initial missteps and negative press coverage.

The early days of Labour’s administration under Starmer were marked by controversies, including charges of cronyism and freebies, which detracted from the government’s agenda. Criticism was directed at Gray amid claims of power struggles and an unclear government narrative during this period. Yet, some experienced Whitehall figures unequivocally dismiss the idea that Gray was the sole cause of these issues.

McSweeney’s appointment is seen as a consolidation of power within Starmer’s political team, a group credited with much of the party’s electoral success. Supported by deputies Jill Cuthbertson and Vidhya Alakeson, both with prior Downing Street experience, McSweeney aims to navigate through internal politics while maintaining a focus on Labour’s broader objectives. Despite his favorable reception among ministers and aides, McSweeney remains a figure of caution among backbench MPs.

This leadership reboot leaves no room for obfuscation. The success of Starmer’s government in communicating a clear purpose and vision now rests squarely on Starmer himself, as observed by political commentators. As one veteran politician poignantly noted, while the problems may not have been exclusively Gray’s fault, they ultimately became her responsibility, affecting the administration’s creditability in its formative period.
