HOUSTON, Texas — The Houston Rockets are turning to young talent as the NBA season approaches. With veteran Fred VanVleet sidelined, second-year guard Reed Sheppard is a potential candidate to fill point-guard minutes. Additionally, the team has brought in JD Davison, named Most Valuable Player in the NBA G League last season.

Davison, who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 215 pounds, was released by the Boston Celtics this offseason. Head coach Ime Udoka values strong defense and has shown interest in Davison’s potential. During Saturday’s training camp practice, Udoka praised Davison, stating, “He’s been great. Very aggressive, handles well, makes good decisions out of the pick and roll.”

Udoka continued, emphasizing Davison’s versatility: “He’s a big body who can pick up full court, so he brings aggression on both sides of the ball.” He further highlighted Davison’s athletic ability, saying he’s capable of playing well off the ball as well. “He’s been really good, so far,” Udoka said.

In the G League, Davison made a significant impact. In 30 games with the Maine Celtics, he averaged 25.1 points per game, shooting 48.3% from the field and 33.6% from three-point range, along with 7.6 assists and 5.3 rebounds. His impressive performance earned him the MVP title for the 2024-25 season.

With VanVleet’s absence, the path is clear for Davison to demonstrate his skills in the NBA. The Rockets are set to face the Atlanta Hawks on Monday night, with the game scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Central. Fans will be watching closely to see how Davison performs as he steps into this newfound role.
