Roof Collapse At Delhi Airport Amid Heavy Rainfall: One Dead, Flights Cancelled

One person has tragically died following a partial roof collapse at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, caused by heavy rains, leading to the cancellation of several domestic flights.

The incident occurred early Friday at Terminal 1, prompting the evacuation and flight suspensions until 2pm, according to Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu.

Director of Delhi Fire Services, Atul Garg, reported eight injuries in the collapse within the terminal’s domestic departure area.

Images showed a crushed taxi amidst the wreckage, with support beams also crumbling, damaging cars in the pick-up and drop-off area.

Authorities attributed the collapse to heavy rainfall, which inundated the airport area with rainfall exceeding June’s average in just three hours.

Prime Minister Modi recently inaugurated a refurbishment project at the airport, but officials clarified that the collapsed roof belonged to an older section unrelated to the recent renovations.

An investigation has been launched into the incident, as opposition figures criticized the government for rushing infrastructure projects without ensuring safety standards.
