Rookie Receiver Pearsall Set for NFL Debut After Recovery
San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall is preparing to make his debut this Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs, just 50 days after recovering from a shooting incident, which took place during a robbery attempt in San Francisco. Head Coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed the news on Friday, noting that Pearsall, the team’s first-round draft pick, will contribute to both the special teams and the receiving unit.
“He’s got roles on special teams, he’s got roles at receiver,” Shanahan stated. “We’ll see how the game unfolds. But he’s healthy and ready to go.” Shanahan expressed confidence in Pearsall’s readiness despite missing practice time: “He’s working his butt off to catch up. He’s gotten better each day and he’ll get better each week.”
The absence of fellow receiver Jauan Jennings, who is sidelined due to a hip injury, underscores Pearsall’s anticipated role in the upcoming rematch against the Chiefs. The 49ers, who reinstated Pearsall from the reserve/non-football injury list this week, are hopeful his presence will mitigate the impact of Jennings’ absence. Jennings is currently the team’s leading receiver with 404 yards this season.
49ers General Manager John Lynch noted that Pearsall’s recovery has been progressing positively. Speaking briefly on radio station KNBR, Lynch remarked that the process was moving in a “good direction.” Shanahan echoed these sentiments by expressing that Pearsall’s participation would have occurred even if Jennings were available.
Aside from Pearsall’s story, other players are managing their fitness levels. Running back Jordan Mason, who injured his shoulder in a recent game, has been practicing all week and is scheduled to play without restrictions. Additionally, running back Christian McCaffrey is being cautiously managed as he recovers from Achilles tendonitis, with a staggered workout regime in place.
