Royal Caribbean's Icon Of The Seas Sets Sail On Maiden Voyage

The Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship owned by Royal Caribbean Group, has embarked on its inaugural journey from the Port of Miami. This magnificent vessel, measuring nearly 1,200 feet from bow to stern, is taking passengers on a seven-day tropical island-hopping adventure. Prior to its departure, the ship was officially christened with the participation of soccer legend Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami teammates.

Jason Liberty, the President and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, expressed his excitement about the Icon of the Seas, stating that it represents more than five decades of innovation and their commitment to delivering exceptional vacation experiences responsibly. With its eight neighborhoods spanning across 20 decks, the ship offers an array of amenities, including six waterslides, seven swimming pools, an ice-skating rink, a theater, and over 40 restaurants, bars, and lounges. Accommodating a maximum of 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew members, the Icon of the Seas aims to cater to the needs of multigenerational families and revolutionize family travel.

The unveiling of the Icon of the Seas in October 2022 resulted in a surge in bookings, making it the most successful day and week in Royal Caribbean’s history. This increase in popularity reflects the growing interest in cruising, with 26 million passengers in 2021 and an estimated 36 million expected this year alone. As people increasingly prioritize experiential travel, cruise vacations have become a favored choice, with an impressive 65% rise in spending on such experiences since 2019.

While the Icon of the Seas offers a remarkable experience, concerns have been raised by environmentalists regarding its methane emissions. The vessel, powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), has been recognized for its cleaner burning capabilities compared to traditional fuels like fuel oil. However, there is a risk of methane leakage, which is a potent greenhouse gas. Bryan Comer, the director of the Marine Programme at the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), explained that LNG as a marine fuel can result in over 120% more greenhouse gas emissions than marine gas oil.

In response to these concerns, Royal Caribbean Group highlights that the Icon of the Seas is 24% more energy efficient than the standards set by the International Maritime Organization for modern ships. The company aims to introduce a net-zero ship by 2035, demonstrating its commitment to sustainability. Despite this, environmentalists argue that the use of LNG as a marine fuel is a step in the wrong direction and urge for greater efforts to cut emissions.

The ship’s naming ceremony was held on Thursday, where Lionel Messi, the renowned Argentine football player and Inter Miami team member, participated. Messi placed a football on a specially-built stand, triggering the customary tradition of breaking a champagne bottle against the ship’s bow for good luck.

The Icon of the Seas, with a construction cost of $2 billion, symbolizes the epitome of luxury and entertainment. Its grandeur includes seven swimming pools, six waterslides, and a wide variety of dining options, making it an attractive choice for travelers seeking extravagance at sea. Royal Caribbean Group aims to provide unforgettable vacations while also addressing environmental concerns as they continue to shape the future of cruise travel.
