Russell and Verstappen Share Pole Position in Thrilling Canadian Grand Prix Qualifying
George Russell and Max Verstappen reached an unparalleled feat in Formula 1 qualifying, sharing pole position at the Canadian Grand Prix in a nail-biting session that saw them clock identical times.
Russell, driving for Mercedes, and Verstappen, the reigning champion with Red Bull, both posted an impressive 1:12.000 lap time during Q3, but Russell secured pole due to setting the time first.
The thrilling qualifying session also witnessed surprises as Red Bull’s Sergio Perez shockingly exited in Q1, while Ferrari’s both drivers failed to make it through Q2.
In a closely contested battle, McLaren‘s Lando Norris trailed just 0.021s behind in third place, with his teammate Oscar Piastri securing the fourth spot.
Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull impressed with a fifth-place finish, a stark contrast to the criticism he faced from former F1 champion Jacques Villeneuve earlier in the weekend.
The shared pole position was a rare occurrence in F1 history, only the second time it has happened since lap times have been measured to three decimal places, echoing the 1997 season finale at Jerez.
After narrowly avoiding a potentially disastrous incident in Q2, Russell’s pole position marks his second in his career and sets the stage for an electrifying race at Montreal‘s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
